Economic policies before and after the elections: What can we expect?

Junio 2013

The Government is facing a difficult political situation on the way to the October mid-term elections, as the recent polls indicate that its positive image continues to fall while the economy is unlikely to help to improve its political standing. Growth is still very low, inflation does not show any signs of receding while the rate of unemployment increased almost one percentage point in an environment in which the private sector is destroying jobs. In the meantime, the Government continues to be on the defensive, by the persistent fall of international reserves and the threat of a parallel exchange rate, that has calmed down in the last few days, but that can depreciate again at any time.

We now know the electoral calendar, and hence by June 22nd we will know who the legislative candidates for the different districts are, and by August 12th, the date of the mandatory primaries, we should get a pretty idea of the chances of the different candidates and political parties to win the mid-term elections.
