Elasticity helps understand consumption better

Fifth week
August 2017

Consumption data causes certain confusion. While construction, industry, car sales and other durables, and the economic activity are growing at different rates compared to one year ago; retail sales in supermarket and shopping centers are not able to put an end to their drops. These numbers draw even more attention when VAT-DGI revenues as well as the wage bill (which combines the evolution of wages with employment) show positive real variations after being adjusted by inflation. Private consumption represents two-thirds of GDP. If the economy continues to grow as it has been doing so far, therefore consumption must be growing as well.
